The West Rim Trail crosses a stunning 20 mile stretch of Zion National Park, though it is most well known, and most hiked, as the start of the trail to Angel's Landing. We decided to take a less tradition route and take the entire trail from the furthest end, Lava Point, back down to the main section of the park. The first half of the trek was relatively cool under the trees of the mountain. The second half ventured into the depths of the desert valley where temperatures reached 105F that day, compliments of the relentless sun. The temperature, the lack of shade, and all-nighter the night before driving to the park led to a near case of heat stroke. When we stumbled upon a flat bed of rock conveniently shaded by some trees, we gladly took a much needed break. I took this picture before proceeding to take a one hour nap on the rocks.
