Survivor

  • location: Bryce Canyon National Park, UT
  • date: July 2014

This bizarre and headstrong tree on a trail through Bryce Canyon defies the circumstances it is in. Not only does it barely rain in the red rock deserts of Utah, the ground upon which it grows is as hard as rock and devoid of soil, not that it mattered anyway with its roots having the power to draw nutrients from the air.

To me, this tree encapsulates this quote quite well: "The first step toward success is taken when you refuse to be a captive of the environment in which you first find yourself."
