We came to Cape Breton with the explicit purpose of catching a great sunset from the Skyline Trail over Cabot Trail. The weather however was stubborn to cooperate. The first day there, thick clouds completely covered the sky. Just before sunset, a bit of blue sky peeked out teasingly, so we rushed to the Skyline Trail, just for the cloud cover to veil the sun for a gloomy sunset. That night, we changed our trip schedule to stay another day and try our luck again.

The next day, the clouds remained, this time bringing rain along with them. At 1PM, we had to make an executive decision whether or not to cut our losses and drive to our next destination, where it is sunny. I've never analyzed the weather more than I did in those next two hours. We poured over cloud cover and wind reports. There was a NW wind traveling at 75km/hour, and according to cloud cover reports, the clouds ended about 250km to the west. Since the high-pressure zone was south of the low-pressure zone we were in, we reckoned that more clouds wouldn't curl in. Hence, we decided to risk a potential sunset elsewhere, betting that the cloud cover will be blown away just when sunset at 6:30PM comes about.

We were right. At around 6PM, looking out from the Skyline Trail, we saw the gaps between the clouds get bigger and bigger until the sun's rays became completely unimpeded by the storm clouds that have passed, casting a golden glow on Cabot Trail below. The view as well as our relief made the moment particularly satisfying.
